Cancer
Cancer, a broad term to describe several different types of cancer affecting various parts of the body, underscores the need for regular screenings and self-examinations. It occurs when normal cells undergo rapid change, turning into cancerous cells and spreading to other parts of the body, especially when undiagnosed and untreated.
There are numerous types of cancer, each with its own unique characteristics and treatment options. Some of the types include:
- Breast cancer arises from a mutation in the breast cells, causing the cells to multiply and spread.
- Skin cancer is a form of cancer that develops due to an abnormal development of cells on the skin. There are various types of cancer, such as melanoma, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. The type of treatment varies in each case, depending on the type of skin cancer, its location and the extent of the cancer.
- Vaginal and gynaecological cancer, a term encompassing cancers affecting the female reproductive system, includes the rare occurrence of vaginal cancer. This uncommon form of cancer originates in the vaginal lining. Those at higher risk of vaginal cancer are typically older women, aged 60 and over, and those with the Human Papillomavirus, a sexually transmitted infection. It's important to remember that while these risk factors exist, vaginal cancer is still a rare condition. Other types of gynaecological cancer include cervical cancer, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, and vulvar cancer.
What is the role of a plastic and reconstructive surgeon in the treatment of cancer?
