Scar Revision

What is scar revision?

Scar revision is a cosmetic and reconstructive surgery that involves reducing the appearance of the scar by allowing it to naturally blend in with the surrounding skin, matching its existing skin tone and texture. Scars are the remnants of wounds that have already healed. Unfortunately, scars are unavoidable repercussions of injuries or surgeries. Due to inadequate healing, the scar may appear more unsightly and disfiguring, which is why surgery is the best cosmetic solution to reduce its appearance, ensuring you are more confident and feel empowered with this treatment.

There are different types of scars, such as:

  • Hypertrophic scars consist of clusters of thickened scar tissue that form at the wound site. These scars are raised and red and increase in width over time. They may appear lighter or darker in colour.
  • Keloids are larger scars that are sometimes itchy and painful. They can form anywhere on the body but are more likely to occur in regions with minimal underlying fat tissue, such as the shoulders, chest, face, ears and neck.
  • Contractures are types of scars that restrict movement due to tightened skin and underlying tissue. They commonly develop due to copious tissue loss, which is more likely to occur after burns.

The type of revision surgery, expertly chosen by our experienced surgeons, depends on the scar category. With their skill and the appropriate surgical techniques, they can drastically improve the area of the scar, giving you the best possible outcome

How do you perform scar revision surgery?

For a deep penetrating scar, an incision is created to surgically remove the old scar. When sealing the area, depending on the scar, the surgeon will need to execute a strategic layered closure where the excision is beyond the skin surface and in the deeper layers. The layers of closure are progressive, eventually sealing the wound surface.

Advanced surgical techniques consist of transformative flap closures. This technique involves repositioning the scar to be less conspicuous or enhance flexibility where the contracture has affected mobility.

FAQ

1What can I expect at a consultation for scar revision surgery?
At your consultation, your surgeon will discuss what to expect on the day of surgery, the outcome of the procedure, and how it will improve your self-confidence and quality of life. They will also conduct a comprehensive medical exam, taking into account your chronic medical conditions, previous medical treatments, and drug allergies. This thorough process ensures that you are fully understood and that the best course of action is taken for your unique situation.
2What is tissue expansion?
Tissue expansion is considered an alternative to a skin graft because an inflatable balloon known as a tissue expander is inserted underneath the skin in close proximity to the area of the scar. The balloon is inflated so the area of the skin expands to conceal the area where the scar was. After this, the surgeon removes the expander and scar. There may be multiple steps involved in enhancing the cosmetic result.
3Are the results of scar revision long-term?
Yes, the results of scar revision surgery are not only immediate but also long-lasting. You'll notice a significant boost in confidence due to the scar disappearing, giving you a reason to feel optimistic about the future.
