Abdominoplasty
What is an abdominoplasty?
An abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) helps contour and tighten the abdominal region. The aim is to create a firm, strengthened, toned abdominal profile for aesthetic purposes. A tummy tuck is performed to rectify an abnormally large, protruding abdominal region that sags excessively and appears very loose.
Sagging and loose abdominal skin may arise from the following:
- Ageing
- Genetics
- Pregnancy
- Weight fluctuations
It's crucial to understand that a tummy tuck is not a standalone weight loss solution. It's not a replacement for regular exercise and a balanced diet. Rather, it's a cosmetic procedure that can enhance the appearance of the abdominal region. Therefore, for those aiming for significant weight loss or planning a pregnancy, it's best to delay a tummy tuck until these goals have been achieved. Remember, your lifestyle choices play a significant role in achieving your body goals.
Who is a good candidate for a tummy tuck?
Suitable candidates are those who maintain a healthy, balanced weight and have realistic expectations of what the procedure is set to achieve.
How do you perform an abdominoplasty?
An incision is made between the belly button and pubic hairline, and the length and shape of the incision depend on several factors, such as the amount of skin that the surgeon needs to remove and the patient’s preferences. Afterwards, the surgeon elevates the abdominal skin and repairs the underlying, weakened abdominal muscles. A second incision is created around the navel to extract extra, loose skin in the upper abdominal region. Once the upper abdominal skin is pulled down gently, the surplus of skin is trimmed, and the remaining skin is closed with sutures. Next, a new belly button opening is made whereby the belly button is pushed through the surface and fixed into position. Skin adhesives, clips, tapes or sutures are used to seal the incisions.
